SPEAKERS
Rod Johnston, MBA, CMA, Owner and Principal Broker, Omni Practice Group – Rod’s background in accounting, finance, sales, and real estate makes him one of the most well-rounded practice transition consultants in America. Rod has an MBA from Seattle University and is a Certified Management Accountant. He is also an Accredited Business Appraiser by the Institute of Business Appraisers. Rod’s experience and background include stints as a financial planner, as Assistant Treasurer and Director of Accounting for AT&T Wireless, and as a Commercial Broker for Keller-Williams and Omni Healthcare Real Estate. Rod started Omni in 2004 with two things in mind; to provide a Nordstrom-like service to help doctors with their transition, and to be an expert resource to medical professionals in the fields we work in. He has developed systems and processes in the brokerage industry that are mimicked and copied throughout the nation. He and his company have transitioned hundreds of practices with great success while maintaining a “win-win” relationship between his clients.

Rohit Malhotra, DVM, MBA, CEPA, Practice Transition and Valuation Consultant, Omni Practice Group – Dr. Rohit Malhotra has over 20 years of leadership experience (Founder, Director, VP, and Chief of Medicine) in many industries including investment banking, national human and veterinary healthcare operations (ranging from $2M to$200M in operational revenue), and mixed animal clinical practice. Dr. Malhotra also has a strong understanding of the veterinary industry and practice ownership having built several clinical practices, worked in a variety of hospital settings (Corporate, Private, Nonprofit, ER/Specialty, General Practice, Ambulatory, etc.) and having treated many different patients from dogs and cats to horses, livestock, and even elephants.
Using his knowledge, skillset, and network, he enjoys helping current veterinary owners improve the value of their practice and transition successfully to accomplish their life goals. Moreover, Dr. Malhotra also enjoys representing the next generation of veterinary owners and buyers who are interested in practice ownership and need mentorship to move forward.
Dr. Malhotra received a B.S. in Management (Track-Finance) and B.A. in Biology from Boston College. He then completed a DVM and MBA dual-degree program at Colorado State University. He completed a rotating clinical-business internship at IVG Hospitals and executive management fellowship at Ethos Veterinary Health. He is certified in Exit Planning Advisory and Valuations, and a certified black belt in Lean Six Sigma to help improve clinical efficiency and practice value for owners. Dr. Malhotra has clinical interests in anesthesia (capture & chemical immobilization), theriogenology, integrative medicine, and rehabilitation; and uses this clinical knowledge and skillset to improve elephant healthcare internationally via his nonprofit.

Tyler Jones, Attorney, Partner Helsell Fetterman – Tyler’s corporate practice consists of helping professionals such as physicians, dentists, veterinarians, CPAs and attorneys with all of their business needs. In addition, Tyler also practices in the area of estate planning, with an emphasis on tax-saving strategies. In this area, Tyler has significant experience assisting individuals with tax-savings oriented wills and living trusts, formation, and maintenance of irrevocable trusts, and coordinating individuals’ retirement plans with their overall estate plan. Once established, he assists with all legal matters that arise during a company’s tenure, including lease renewals, real estate acquisitions, space-sharing arrangements, issues with clients/patients, employment questions, partner buy-ins, multi-practice ownership, and partnership dissolution. When they are ready to retire, he helps his clients form and implement tax-efficient exit strategies, including sales of the businesses, deferred compensation structures, and other “buy-out” mechanisms. Tyler’s tax practice focuses on representing individuals, non-profit organizations, and for-profit businesses in matters with the Internal Revenue Service, Washington State Department of Revenue, and the U.S. Department of Justice. These include tax audits, collection issues, installment agreements, offers in compromise, tax liens, penalty abatements, voluntary disclosure issues, and other IRS disciplinary actions. He also advises taxpayers on complicated tax transactions and various income tax planning opportunities for closely held entities, family investment companies, real estate holdings companies, and healthcare groups. Tyler earned his law degree from Seattle University School of Law, where he earned the school’s President’s Scholarship for all three years. During law school, he focused on tax and business law, and was president of the law school’s moot court program, advancing to a national competition, as well as being elected to the National Order of Barristers. After graduating law school, Tyler received his Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of Washington School of Law. In addition to his legal practice, Tyler is an adjunct professor with Golden Gate University’s Graduate Tax Program, where he teaches Federal Gift and Estate Tax and Estate Planning courses, and has coached the University of Washington School of Law’s National Tax Moot Court Team.
